The United Kingdom is discussing new rules for overseas students, trying to make it mandatory for them to leave the country when they complete their education in a particular university there.
They cannot continue their stay with an intention to work or settle in the country. Going on a student visa will not permit you to do anything beyond studying.
Speaking about the same to BBC Radio 4 on Friday, Business Secretary, Sajid Javid said “What we do have is an immigration system that allows those who want to study in world class universities to come here.’’
He also said that there must be a system that stops any abuse of immigration system. He said, “We have to break the link. We should allow people [to come] here who want to study, and once they have completed [their studies] they leave.”
Effects On UK’s Higher Education System!
Indian student Diaspora is second only to the Chinese in the UK in higher education. Since there has been a fall in the number of Indian students from the academic year 2012-2013 and 2013-2014, the British immigration policy has been under severe criticism. According to Sir Leszek Borysiewicz, Vice-Chancellor of Cambridge University, UK’s student visa policy is a major threat to its higher education system.
India born Nobel Prize winner Venkatraman Ramakrishnan has a similar opinion in this matter. Looks like UK needs to rethink its decision to uphold its higher education systems.
