Preet Kaur Gill the first Sikh lady MP in the UK has been selected as a member of a powerful select committee of the Parliament. This select committee of the UK Parliament will analyze the work of the UK Home Office.
The first Sikh lady MP of the Labor Party representing the Birmingham Edgbaston seat will be one among the eleven MPs cutting across party lines in the Home affairs committee. This committee will scrutinize the expenditure, policy, and management of the Home Office ministry.
Preet Kaur Gill said that she was extremely happy with her selection to the committee and would put forth her best foot forward. The committee ceased to exist with the dissolution of the UK Parliament and has now been reconstituted.
The subject matter for scrutiny taken up by the committee is comprehensive and appealing said Preet Kaur Gill as quoted by the Times of India.
The parliamentary committee has the freedom to choose the subjects for inquiry that fall within the jurisdiction of the UK Home Office. The subjects of the earlier held inquiry include police, extradition, anti-terrorism, prostitution, drugs, human trafficking, asylum, immigration, hate crime, and extremism.
The inquiry reports are published by the committee and the government is bound to take actions on its recommendations. Preet Kaur Gill will be able to call in ministers and ask questions as a member of the committee. She can also ask any individual to bear testimony on any subject being inquired by the committee and make the government accountable.
