EU’s 100 billion Euros Brexit bill has been rejected by the UK even as Michael Barnier and David Davies disagreed with each other over the terms for exit talks. Davis also clarified that the news in Sunday Times that UK Prime Minister Theresa May will accept 54.6 billion Euros Brexit bill is completely inaccurate.
Speaking to Andrew Marr of the BBC Davies said that as Barnier is not getting any reply on the bill acceptable to the UK, they are creating this pressure. He also insisted that UK cannot be forced to accept adverse terms just because EU criticizes that sufficient progress is yet to be made.
The Chief EU negotiator Michael Barnier demanded that the UK must begin to take the negotiations seriously even as the March 2019 deadline is fast approaching. The EU-UK talks have been stalled over the priority of the first agenda for negotiation- Brexit bill for UK or UK’s future relations with EU.
Davis said that the issue with the EU is that it is only keen to discuss the terms of the exit and unwilling to discuss the future relationship with the UK. The UK has said that it needs adequate time to examine the huge Brexit bill in detail. Davis said that EU has even complained over the long presentation given by him, as quoted by the New Indian Express. He said that the UK is approaching the exit very systematically and pragmatically, a typical feature of the UK lifestyle.
The UK believes that it is not legally bound for any Brexit bill payment. It, however, accepts that any access to EU institutions in the future will have to be paid for. But it is unwilling to quote a figure without the details of any such access.
