Most Europeans hope they’ll be able to travel before August 2021 As per a report – Monitoring Sentiment for Domestic and Intra-European Travel [Wave 5] – published on February 21, 2021, “54% of respondents consider travelling in the coming 6 months”. This is the second consecutive period that the sentiment of the Europeans for domestic as well as intra-European trips is recovering. The Report is by the European Travel Commission [ETC]. The project is co-funded by the European Union. Featuring data collected in January 2021, the Report assesses the impact of COVID-19 pandemic on the travel plans of Europeans. The methodology for the findings was a survey conducted through online market research of survey participants that were consumers with a minimum of 2 overnight trips in 2019.  

Co-funded by the European Union, the project Monitoring Sentiment for Domestic and Intra-European Travel gauges the behaviours, sentiments, and drivers for domestic and intra-European travel in 10 of the high-volume European source markets –

·         France

·         Italy

·         UK

·         Germany

·         Netherlands

·         Belgium

·         Spain

·         Poland

·         Austria

·         Switzerland

Key findings and recommendations are to be made available in 6 monthly reports beginning September 2020.

The distribution and data collection periods for the individual reports –

·         Wave 1 [August 27, 2020 to September 15, 2020; sample – 5,762]

·         Wave 2 [September 21, 2020 to October 9, 2020; sample – 5,876]

·         Wave 3 [October 19, 2020 to November 6, 2020; sample– 5,832

·         Wave 4 [November 20, 2020 to December 3, 2020; sample – 5,742]

·         Wave 5 [December 18, 2020 to January 7, 2021; sample –5,855]

Research themes examined – preferences and trip planning [10 questions], travel concerns and impact of COVID-19 on travel [6 questions], COVID-19 and responsible travel [3 questions], and travel personas [1 question].

For the survey for Monitoring Sentiment for Domestic and Intra-European Travel [Wave 5], 53% respondents were male and 47% were female.

54% of respondents consider travelling in the coming 6 months
34% of Europeans intend to plan a trip between May and July 2021
41% now plan to travel to another European country[This is the highest figure since this series of surveys began]
Leisure remains the main reason for travel for 64% of respondents with short-term plans
18% show interest in sun and beach destinations
16% show interest in visiting city destinations
54% state willingness to travel by plane
Only 16% of Europeans now see flying as posing a health risk
36% of early-bird travellers put down preference for travelling by car
5 most popular European countries to visit – Spain, Italy, France, Greece, Germany [in order of preference]
  Among Europeans with short-term travel plans, a wide majority – that is, 69% – put down the “strict Health and Safety protocols in destinations” as being critical for having “a safer and more relaxed holiday experience”.
