Entry/Exit System to be launched in the EU

According to Schengen News Reports, the EU Commission recently confirmed the launch of the Entry/Exit system by the beginning of October 2024. This decision followed reports stating the delay of the EES launch date.

A spokesperson for the EU Commission stated that all EU member states must be prepared for the EES launch. The launch date was earlier set at November 10, 2024, but it might be postponed to November 17, 2024.

However, three EU countries, including France, Germany, and the Netherlands, requested more time via a letter to EU Commissioner Ylva Johansson. The letter stated that the countries will not be ready for the EES launch by early October as they require more time to implement the new border system.

The letter also mentioned that these countries have not been able to carry out tests to check the system's smooth processing. The EU Commission will support these countries and other countries facing difficulties in the EES launch.

What is the new Entry-Exit System in the EU?

The new Entry/Exit System (EES) is an automated system that will replace the manual process of passport stamping. All non-EU citizens must register themselves after the new system is launched. This rule is applicable to all non-EU citizens, regardless of whether they are permitted visa-free entry to the EU or not.

Travelers will be required to provide their biometrics information along with other personal information as listed in their travel documents. A profile will be created once the applicant provides all the information. The profile will store the data for three years, and this data will be used to register the entry and exit of non-EU citizens.

The data will also help in detecting people staying beyond the maximum period of stay allowed, preventing irregular immigration, and even identifying candidates using fake identities to enter the EU.
