The Australia Subclass 485 Post Study Work Visa is a Temporary Graduate Visa that permits graduates to work temporarily in Australia after their studies. It has 2 streams - Post-Study Work Stream and Graduate Work Stream.
The GWS is for overseas students who graduate with qualifications and skills. These must relate to an occupation that is in demand in the labor market in Australia. It must also be indicated in the list of qualified skilled occupations. A visa is normally approved for 18 months under this stream, as quoted by the SBS.
The Subclass 485 Post Study Work Visa offers extended choices for working in Australia to qualified graduates with a higher education degree. The successful applicants are offered a visa that has a validity of 2, 3 or 4 years. This depends on the highest educational qualification obtained by them.
The course/courses must have been resulted in an eligible qualification to meet the Australian study requirement. The eligible qualifications vary depending on the Subclass 485 Visa stream selected by the applicant.

Study resulting in a trade qualification or diploma level qualification will not be eligible.
For example, an overseas student can complete a 1-year Bachelor degree succeeded by a 1-year Masters degree. This is for catering to the Australian study requirement for the Subclass 485 Post Study Work Visa. However, other components of the criteria must also be satisfied by the student.
