Department of Immigration and Border Protection (DIBP) of Australia announced the re-opening of Non-Contributory Parent and Other Family Visas. It will now accept all applications received for the following categories:

  • Parent visa (subclass 103)
  • Aged Parent visa (subclass 804)
  • Aged Dependent Relative visa (subclasses 114 and 838)
  • Remaining Relative visa (subclasses 115 and 835)
  • Carer visa (subclasses 116 and 836)

However, the applications received after June 2, 2014 and before September 25, 2014, will remain invalid and won't be accepted for further processing. This is because of the announcement made by DIBP on June 2, 2014, that it has closed accepting applications for all the above stated visas sub-classes.

Soon after the closure announcement was made,  Senator Hanson-Young made a disallowance motion to stop the migration amendment, which he apparently succeeded in on September 24th.

The non-contributory parent category visas to Australia has a very long wait - some visas of even 25-30 years, compared to contributory parent visa. Therefore, Minister Cash said that the applicants should be advised about the waiting time before they file an application.
