DACA alternative bill is quietly being drafted by key Republican senators deliberating the outline of the immigration plan to protect several thousands of DACA immigrants. These will be forfeiting deportation safeguards and work permits in early 2018.
The first round of talks reveals that prominent US Senators are keen to draft a DACA alternative bill. Through this, they aim to win the support of both Trump and Democrats. US President Trump said that the immigration program DACA will be wound up in March 2018. This has forced the US lawmakers to draft a DACA alternative bill. It must also take care of crucial enforcement and border security provisions, as quoted by the Politico.
John Cornyn the Senate Majority Whip said that Chuck Grassley the Senate Judiciary Committee chairman has convened a meeting. It will be held with the agenda of immigration and includes prominent lawmakers. These are inclusive of South Carolina’s Lindsey Graham, North Carolina’s Thom Tillis, and Oklahoma’s James Lankford.
Among the other Republican Senators engaged in the talks include Arizona’s Jeff Flake and Georgia’s David Perdue. A DACA deal above party lines appears to be far from being achieved. Democrat Senators are looking forward to the list of demands from the Republicans. This is in exchange for legalizing the DACA immigrants.
DACA alternative bill that sails through the Senate may get into troubled waters in the US Congress that is more conservative. This is notwithstanding even the sweeteners of GOP.
However, there is clarity emerging on broader outlines for consensus. For example, Senators have categorically ruled out the inclusion of verification system for the workplace. It is known as E-Verify and was proposed to be placed in the final DACA bill.
