Changes to H-1B visa rules have been opposed by top US lawmakers saying it will result in a drain of talents from the US. Tulsi Gabbard an influential member of the Congress from the Democratic Party said that draconian curbs on H-1B visas will tear apart families. It will drain talents and expertise from the US. Relationship with India, a crucial partner will also be harmed, said Gabbard.
Proposal to stop extensions of H-1B visa holders implies deportation of nearly 750, 000 to 500,000 H-1B visa holders from India, said the Congresswoman. Most of them have created jobs, are business owners, and have added strength to the economy of the US, she elaborated. The brain drain will choke innovation and reduce the ability of the US economy to compete in globally, added Gabbard.
Top US lawmakers have condemned the proposed changes to H-1B visa rules by Trump administration. This will result in self-deportation of around 7.5 lakh to 5 lakh US-Indians. The talents will be drained away from the US by this, they added, as quoted by the Times of India. They have also said that the proposal will fail to garner adequate support for enactment given the devastating effect on the US Tech industry.
Raja Krishnamoorthi the Indian-American member of US Congress said that it cannot be denied that importance must be given to improving latest training for local workers. But stopping the extensions of H-1B visas will be detrimental to the economy of the US. It will also drive away investments from the US as firms will be forced to increase offshore hiring, added the Congress member.
Ro Khanna the member of the US Congress said that the proposal is against immigrants. It is just foolish apart from being wrong to say to immigrants’ that they and their children do not have a place in the US. He questioned Trump in a tweet that would the US be really greater as it is today without the immigrants.
