In Canada, the Chamber of Commerce and Boards of Trade have called on all the parties that are running in the 2019 federal elections and urged them for better implementation of skills training for workers coming from foreign countries. They also added that there is need for promoting effective and better immigration policies.
The Global Cities Council of Canada recommended that all parties should commit to strategies that would enhance talent development. Some of the recommendations included increased workforce participation, encourage trades participation, wider and affordable access to childcare and granting special incentives for continuous skill improvement.
According to Michel Leblanc, president (Chamber of Commerce – Metropolitan Montreal) the labour market of Canada is experiencing pressure because of Stagnant wages, aging workforce, increased skill gap and diminishing participation rate of workforce. He also added saying that there should be a smarter immigration policy and the strategic investment in Canadians should be doubled.
The Canadian Global Cities Council says that the Government of Canada should have focused thinking towards facilitative and enhanced administration of Immigration, so that the issue of the shortage of labour force is solved. It also added that this would ensure the businesses would have access to ample talent. The CGCC further added that work permit exemptions and faster application processing should be encouraged and maintained consistently; that sector – specific open work permits for temporary foreign workforce should be implemented.
The CGCC also recommended that there should be specific steps taken so that they can retain international students, enhance credential recognition and implement a ‘trusted employer program’ for streamlining applications for the purpose of business, alongside a proven and consistent track record.
Owing to the strong impact that Canada has internationally made, for its quality network of education, Leblanc said that they needed to leverage those assets towards improved training, attraction and retaining talent.
The primary goal of the CGCC is to help in influencing the policies of the nation and help in building sustainable and competitive urban economies. The 8 cities that participated were Brampton, Calgary, Edmonton, Halifax, Montreal, Toronto, Vancouver and Winnipeg.
