A study by Statistics Canada shows that prior Canadian work experience and education can increase your earning potential in Canada. The report looks at PR Visa holders who were admitted in 2016 in Canada. PR Visa holders who had work experience in Canada had the highest median entry wages among the others after one year of arrival.
New permanent residents in Canada who had both prior Canadian work experience and education had a median entry income of $39,800. Permanent residents who only had prior Canadian work experience had a median income of $38,100. As per Statistics Canada, these wages were comparable to the entire population in Canada.
The median entry wage for PRs who entered in 2016 was $25,900 in 2017. However, this was much lesser than the median wage for the population of Canada, which was $36,100 in 2017.
Canadian work experience means more earnings
The study by Statistics Canada has observed that the increase in entry-level wages can be attributed to the increase in the number of Canadian Work Permit holders transitioning to PR.
Between 2007 and 2016, the number of tax-filing immigrants with Canadian work experience increased by 166% while those without Canadian work experience increased by 2%.
The wages of immigrants typically increase with the number of years since getting PR. For instance, immigrants admitted in 2007 had a median wage of $20,400 after one year of arrival. In 2017, the median wage of the same group increased to $33,500, which indicates an increase of 64%.
The study also revealed that immigrants who saw the most increase in income were the ones who had both a Study Permit and Work Permit for Canada. The income of this group increased by 81% to $63,800 by 2017. In comparison, only Work Permit holders increased their income by 36% to $48,100.
Having prior work experience in Canada also increased the chances of retention. The study revealed that immigrants who arrived in Canada in 2012 still lived in the same province after five years.
86% of all the immigrants who came to Canada in 2012 filed a tax return in the same province in which they first settled as PRs in 2017.
