The latest Canadian citizenship draft includes honoring treaties with native nationals, filling out the census, and paying taxes. These are listed as compulsory obligations for Canadian citizenship in the latest study guide for applicants’ citizenship of Canada.
The Canadian Press working copy reveals that the Federal government of Canada has completely transformed the book that is referred by applicants of Canadian citizenship test. The proposed Canadian citizenship draft divides the responsibilities of Canadian citizens in to Mandatory and Voluntary.
The mandatory responsibilities include honoring treaties with native nationals, filling out the census, paying taxes, serving on a jury and obeying the law.
The optional responsibilities include participating in the political process, appreciating official bilingualism, and respecting human rights of fellow beings.
The Canadian citizenship draft says that owing to the treaties negotiated by the government, Canadian nationals can today purchase land and own residential properties. The citizens of Canada have obligations under these treaties in the form of honor agreements, adds the draft.
The Canadian citizenship draft deals extensively with the current and past lives of native people. This includes several references to Reconciliation and Truth Commission's study on residential schools. There is also a detailed section on what occurred at these schools, as quoted by the CTV News.
The draft also deals extensively with dark chapters of History of Canada when Jews, South Asians, Chinese and specially-abled Canadian nationals were discriminated against. These references were earlier limited exceptionally or absent.
Each and every department of the Government has been consulted as per the draft copy’s separate briefing notes. The most repeated mantras of Trudeau –‘Canada has evolved stronger notwithstanding the differences, but because of them’ is present directly at the beginning of the draft as – ‘Canadians have become stronger because of their differences’.
