Canada PR

The government of Canada has eased PR for overseas students while the US has tightened the visa rules for students. The changes to immigration system announced by Canada are expected to increase the Canada PR applications by overseas students by 40%.

The changes to immigration rules will alter the system of scoring for selection of PR applicants. Lesser points will now be offered for a Job offer. On the other hand, extra points will be offered to overseas students who complete post-secondary education in Canada.

Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada carried out surveys to gauge the implications of these changes. These indicate that owing to the changes the percentage of overseas students obtaining Canada PR will enhance to 40% from the current 30%.

Meanwhile, the US administration has released a draft policy. This tightens the rules pertaining to the calculation of overstay of visa by overseas students. It is scheduled to become effective from 9 August, as quoted by the Times of India.

As per the proposed policy, the unlawful stay will be calculated from the day the oversea student fails to keep up the immigration status. The current rules calculate the unlawful stay only from the day violation is discovered by the US authorities. Or else it is calculated from the day a judge passes an order such as for deportation.

The proposed changes will enhance the number of days that are counted as unlawful stay. Depending on the number of days an overseas student overstays, the student can be barred from staying in the US or entering or obtaining PR.

The new visa rules will create obstacles for students whose immigration status concludes. It will make it tough to apply for a change of status or visa or PR.
