Canada will adopt the Immigration Pact of the UN along with other 160 nations. It is the ‘UN Global Compact for Regular, Orderly, and Safe Migration’. The pact specifies 23 objectives for global cooperation.
The other 160 nations are the member states of the United Nations. Canada has joined them in adopting the latest negotiated pact for international immigration. The immigration pact is non-binding in nature. The objectives of the pact are aimed at improving cooperation at the international level. This is for all forms of immigration from skilled workers to refugees, as quoted by the CIC News.
The pact enumerates that its aim is to optimize the positive effects of immigration. It terms immigration to be a source of sustainable development, innovation, and prosperity in our globalized world.
The Government of Canada termed the pact to be the first joint framework for the international response to immigration. It comes at a time when around 258 million people are immigrating across the world. It is a 49% increase over the year 2000. 68.5 million out of these are forcibly displaced people escaping discrimination, war, and violence.
The Canadian Government has specified targets for immigration levels up to 2021. This will witness 1.3 million plus the arrival of fresh PR immigrants during 2018 and 2021. It has set a target of 330,800 fresh admissions for 2019 alone. This is through its diverse refugee, family, and economic immigration programs.
The immigration pact has been adopted on International Human Rights Day on December 10. It is even as there is enhanced backlash against immigration in many nations including the US and Europe.
