Ireland has said that clarity on the borders with the UK is a must for Brexit talks progress aimed at giving clarity to its exit from the EU. This was announced by Simon Coveney the Foreign Minister of Ireland.
UK’s only land frontier with the EU after the exit will be the border with Northern Ireland. The border issue is one of the three main issues that EU wants to be resolved prior to trade talks in December. The clarity on the border issue is inadequate said the Ireland Foreign Minister.
At present, there is no delivery mechanism in reality for the achievement of assurances said, Coveney. The phase two for the Brexit talks progress cannot be made mere on assurances, he added. All queries need not be answered. But definitely more is needed than the assurances offered at present, added the Minister.
An understanding is required that issues of Ireland will be resolved on priority. This is even in the scenario of trade talks collapsing and this cannot be ruled out, said Coveney. Ireland is the most risked member of the EU when the UK exits the bloc owing to close trade links, as quoted by the Indian Express.
The implication is that Ireland must plan for all possible outcomes and it is already doing so, said the Foreign Minister. Ireland has asked for the EU and the UK to arrive at a bespoke partnership for the customs union. This is to eliminate the threat of tough border with Northern Ireland.
Ireland is insisting the UK commit to a fallback option. This includes a possible special arrangement for Northern Ireland. It is in the event of UK’s failure to maintain affinity in trade ties with the EU.
