Canada is offering an additional extension of 18 months to the Post-Graduation Work Permits (PGWP) holders.
“We’re providing international graduates whose work permit is expiring or has expired with some additional time to stay in Canada to gain valuable work experience and potentially qualify to become a permanent resident.”
Usually, the PGWPs are not renewable, but starting from April 6, the international graduates with these permits expiring this year or have expired already will be able to qualify for an additional or extended work permit to stay longer for up to 18 months.
Those PGWP holders whose work permits have already expired can restore their status. And in case the work permits are beyond the 90-day restoration period, they will get an interim work authorization while they wait for their new work permit application.
In 2022, 95,000 international students were successfully transitioned to permanent residence. By the end of 2022, there were a total of 286,000 PGWP holders in Canada, as per the IRCC. While 67,000 have already applied for PR, about 127,000 were set to expire in 2023.
