Beware of Visa fraud by Travel Agents

Overseas travelers must be cautious of Visa fraud by travel agents. Simon Onwusaka a 36-year aged travel agent was produced before Yaba Chief Magistrates’ Court in Lagos. This is for allegedly cheating a businessman of N1.5 million.

Onwusaka resides in Lagos’s area of Ajegunle. He is being tried on a 3 count charge of stealing, intent to defraud, and conspiracy. Sgt. Modupe Olaluwoye the Prosecutor informed the court that the accused committed the offenses roughly in March this year. This was at Unity Crescent, No.15, Ajegungle area, Lagos.

The complainant Mr. Paul Onyeanuforo made the electronic transfer said Olaluwoye. This was from his account with No. 6052101480 with Fidelity Bank. It was transferred to the accused for processing his travel logistics, as quoted by the Vanguard NGR.

The prosecutor said that the accused deceitfully obtained N1.5 million. This was in the pretext of obtaining a flight ticket, Australia Visa, and hotel reservations for the plaintiff. However, a fake visa and air ticket were given to the complainant.

Mr. Paul Onyeanuforo discovered at the airport that the visa and ticket were fake. He was also unable to locate the travel agent. He reported the case to the Police and they conducted an investigation. The accused was then arrested in Gombe State.

The offenses are in contravention of Sections 287, 314, and 411 of the 2015 Criminal Laws of Lagos State. The accused nevertheless pleaded of not being liable for the offenses.

Oluwatoyin Oghere the Chief Magistrate offered bail to the accused in Visa fraud for a sum of N1 million. This is along with 2 sureties of equal amount. One of the sureties had to be a blood kin of the accused staying within the jurisdiction of the court.
