Economists and Business stakeholders have warned that the Australian economy will suffer due to Dick Smith’s campaign that immigration is resulting in inequality. They have also criticized his campaign titled ‘Grim Reaper’ that intends to rescue Australia from his alleged obsession with infinite growth.

The one million-dollar campaign was launched by the Australian entrepreneur at the Hilton Hotel in Sydney with the theme ‘Dick Smith Fair Go campaign’. He has attacked the policies of politicians in Australia and called upon them to drastically reduce the intake of immigrants.

Smith said that even at the individual level people have plans for their families but the politicians lack any such plan for the nation. He has proposed that in order to address the issue of inequality the immigration intake of Australia must be reduced to 70,000 from the current 200, 000. Inequalities in wealth must be addressed to avoid revolutions said, Smith, as quoted by the Australian.

Peter McDonald the Demography Professor of the University of Melbourne said that the evidence offered by Smith was not adequate to substantiate his claims. He warned that Smith’s campaign will cause damage to the Australian economy.

Peter explained that Australia has quite amateur demography. There is no proof that immigrants are taking away jobs from the natives. The issue is at the skills level and immigrants have a positive impact on the economy, added the Professor. He explained that Smith is anti-immigration from a long time. His campaign is mismatching information on Australian economy to support his viewpoint, clarified McDonald.

Carla Wilshire the Chief Executive of Migration Council Australia demanded Smith to explain his statistics. She said that the survey completed in 2015 revealed that immigration reduced inequality. It also assisted to enhance the competitiveness and long-term performance of Australian economy added Ms. Wilshire.
