All overseas immigrant applicants of Australia PR could be asked to spend time in Australia on provisional visas by the government of Australia. This will be a part of the streamline processes to reduce costs.
As per the new proposal, the applicants of Australia PR who are possessing provisional visas could not have equal access to welfare schemes on par with permanent residents. This was revealed by the official documents, as quoted by The Australian.
Immigration Minister Peter Dutton has flagged the proposed changes in a discussion paper. He has asked the people of Australia to express their views on drastic simplification of the visa regime in Australia.
The numbers of Australia short-term visitors is projected to reach 10 million by the year 2022. The Australian government is thus planning to decrease the categories of visas to 10 from the current 99 visas. The Immigration Minister added that the private sector would be asked to modernize the Australia visa application process.
Mr. Dutton said the government has allocated 35 million dollars for two years in this year’s budget for preliminary work related to the betterment of service delivery. Some of the Australia visas such as the Partner visa already have a period of provisional visas prior to offering Australia PR to the immigrant applicants.
The consultation paper of the Department of Immigration and Border Protection in Australia reveals that most of the categories of permanent visas do not have the phase of provisional visas. Applicants are also not required to reside for any period prior to obtaining or applying for the Australia PR.
Immigrants possessing the Australia PR could also qualify for welfare payments and services. The UK, the US, and the Netherlands have a better process of formal assessment for applicants of Permanent Residency, elaborated the paper. Mr. Dutton said that the new proposals were aimed at enhancing the visa system’s integrity and decreasing the taxpayers’ burden.
