New Zealand created another immigration record for intake levels of immigrants with fresh 100,000 immigrants. So who are these overseas workers and students? To begin with, around 30,000 are New Zealand nationals returning to the nation and a few of them are Australia nationals. The rest 72,000 who contributed to the immigration record are overseas students, workers, working holiday visa holders and from other less renowned visa categories.
As far as the work visas are concerned, they were offered chiefly to young workers from the UK, the US, Ireland, Canada and Western Europe. In the category of essential skills visas, nationals of Philippines were offered more visas in 2015-16.
In the last ten years, essential skills visas offered to Indians and Filipinos has increased almost thrice as per the statistics of the Ministry of Employment, Business, and Innovation. Student visas were offered mainly to immigrants from India, Philippines, and China. A total of 91, 261 students from India, the UK and China were approved in 2015-16, as quoted by the Radio NZ. Similarly 52, 052 immigrants have been approved the residence visas who were again from India, the UK, and China.
Paul Spoonley the Distinguished Professor of Massey University said that research has proved that an immigrant takes 12 years to settle in New Zealand. This is the time period for an immigrant to qualify, get a job, avail work experience and start working in a preferred area. Thus immigration studies for long term period reveal more when compared with short-term studies, added the Professor.
Elaborating on the immigration record Prof. Spoonley said that it is wrong to say that immigrants disturb the social fabric and deprive New Zealander of jobs or houses.
