According to StatCan, there were 500,000 jobs generated in various sectors in 2023. November saw a minimal change in employment, with an increase of 25,000 jobs which is a 0.1% in rise.

There were many immigrants who came to Canada in order to have employment opportunities in the recent years. The population of immigrants reached a high of 23.0% in 2021, and 98% of growth in population of immigrants and non-permanent residents were seen from 1st July, 2022 to 1st July, 2023.

Employment data for sectors and regions in Canada

The construction and manufacturing sectors were positively developed with a rise in employment by 16,000 (+1.0%) and 18,000 (+1.6%). This growth contributed to a 0.7% decrease in total hours worked in November.

New Brunswick reported an increase in employment by 2,400 (+0.6%) for the second consecutive month. Employment in the province grew by 15,000 (+4.0%) in the 12 months leading to November 2023, and the unemployment rate dropped to 6.4%, down 0.8 percentage points from November 2022.

Quebec saw a 0.3 percentage rise in the unemployment rate, reaching 5.2%, a notable increase from the record low of 3.9% in November 2022.

Employment in Ontario remained same for the fifth straight month, with the unemployment rate standing at 6.1%, up 1.2 percentage from April.

Wage increase and work arrangements

Employment for individuals aged 25 to 54 remained stable in November. Women working full-time in this age group increased to 34,000 (+0.6%). The average hourly wage showed an increase year by year of 4.8%, reaching $34.28 in November.

Hybrid work arrangements tripled since January 2022, reaching 11.7% in November 2023. Factors such as industry composition and flexible schedules contributed to this shift.

Parents of young children, especially those aged five or younger, were more likely to have hybrid work arrangements or work from home. Approximately 30.1% of parents had these flexible work options, including 33.2% of mothers and 27.4% of fathers with young children.
