More than 50% of non-EU residence permits granted to non-EU nationals was for overseas students in 2015. EU revealed these statistics and it shows that Ireland offered the maximum number of these permits. Ireland offered 57% of the non-EU residence permits to overseas students. This was the highest for any member state of the EU.
The latest statistics revealed by the EU show that 38, 433 non-EU residence permits were approved in 2015. This was a record high for last ten years, as quoted by the Times Co UK. Out of these, more than 22, 000 permits were approved based on applicants’ education.
Family-based approvals for non-EU residence permits were 3, 400 while the numbers for employment purposes was 6,000. Residence permits for other reasons that include humanitarian and compassionate grounds were 6, 800. Nationals of Brazil received the maximum figure of residence permits with 10, 955.
3.4 million First permits for residence were offered by the EU in 2016 to nationals from outside the EU. This is the record high for the latest value for data available since 2008. It represents an increase of 28% or extra 733 thousand first residence permits as compared with 2015.
UK offered the highest number of first permits for residence in the EU for 2016 with 866 thousand permits. Poland offered the second highest permits with 586 thousand and Germany the third highest with 505 thousand permits.
The highest number of first residence permits in 2016 was offered for other reasons with 31% of the total first residence permits issued with 1.03 million permits. Permits for employment reasons with 25% or 853 thousand permits were the second highest. 23% or 779 thousand permits were for family-related reasons and 21% or 695 thousand permits for study-related reasons.
