Highlights of new residence permits

  • The UNRIC recently updated that 37 lakh new residence permits were issued last year.
  • In 2021, 29 lakh new residence permits and in 2019, 30 lakh new residence permits were issued.
  • According to the UNRIC update, the EU registered 5.3% of non-EU citizens in 2022.
  • Around 10 lakh non-EU citizens were given employment opportunities.
  • 38% increase in asylum applications from 2019.

EU Registered 5.3% of Non-EU Citizens

In 2022, the EU found a population of 23.8 million non-EU citizens, making 5.3% of 447 million residents within the 27-nation bloc. According to UNRIC data, three-fourths of this non-EU demographic was issued for key nations, with Germany, France, Spain, and Italy emerging as primary residence centers.

There is frequent migration to EU countries, and the proportion of foreign nationals coming to European countries increased by 12.5%. As a result, Switzerland holds 30.2% of non-nationals, Australia holds 29.2%, Iceland holds 20.1%, and Norway holds 16.1%, and the United States holds 13.5%.

International Organization for Migration

The International Organization for Migration (IOM) has registered 264,000 illegal entries in 2023 into the EU through land or sea routes. In 2021, the EU Commission reported 2.26 million people migrating to the EU from other continents. In 2021, outbound migration from the EU reached 2.5 million people who are either relocating to other destinations outside the EU or changing countries within the EU.

 

UNRIC provided the data that showed the EU’s population would have decreased by 500,000 in 2019 due to a combination of deaths surpassing births.

 

Migrants Facing Labour Shortfall in EU

In 2022, 9.93 million non-EU citizens were hired within the EU, constituting 5.1% of the workforce. The employment rate for Europeans was 77%, and non-Europeans was 67%.
