2 year Australia visas have been offered to overseas pilots to cater to the shortage of pilots in Australia. This has resulted in many flights getting canceled by now. Peter Dutton, the Home Minister of Australia has said that flight pilots have been added to the list of skilled workers. They will be allowed to arrive with the 2 year Australia visas, added the Minister.

The apex body for regional Airlines said that overseas pilots were required to cater to the skill shortages. It has already resulted in many flights getting canceled. Mike Higgins Chief Executive of Regional Aviation Association of Australia said that they had successfully lobbied for the hiring of overseas pilots with Dutton.

List of skilled occupations will be revised to include flight pilots, as quoted by the Adelaide Now. This will permit them to arrive in Australia through the provisional work visas from next month. The spokesperson for Qantas Andrew McGinnes said that the flights in the regional areas had been canceled recently owing to the scarcity of pilots. This was for the months of October and November 2017. Along with technical issues, pilot shortages was the main reason for this, added McGinnes.

The Spokesperson further added that certain areas of the network have been tweaked. Lesser lights with large carriers were operated to reduce the impact on actual capacity, said McGinnes. Around 600 pilots are undergoing training. This decreases the reserve staff required in case any pilot falls sick, he added.

Australian and International Pilots Association President Murray Butt said that the decision taken by Peter Dutton is an ad hoc arrangement. This does not cater to the authentic issues that have resulted in the shortage of pilots. AIPA represents more than 2000 pilots of Qantas.
