2 Muslim women have been elected to the US Congress for the first time and have created history. They are Rashida Tlaib aged 42 years and Ilhan Omar 37 years.
Rashida Tlaib is a onetime refugee to the US from Somalia. Ilhan Omar is the daughter of Palestinian immigrants in the US. They have won from the Democratic Party and are staunch supporters of minority communities.
Omar arrived at the US at the age of 8 fleeing civil war in Somalia. Her family settled in Minnesota that has a sizable population of the Somalis. She has won from the seat vacated by Ellison who gave up the congressional seat to contest for the Attorney General of Minnesota.
Omar is opposed to the restrictive immigration policies of President Trump. She supports a system of universal healthcare. The newly elected US Congress member also wants to abolish the ICE. US Immigration and Customs Enforcement had of late held raids for deportation.
Rashida Tlaib is the daughter of Palestinian immigrants in Detroit, as quoted by the Times of India. She is a fighter who once heckled Trump during his 2016 campaign stop in Detroit.
Tlaib said that she did not contest the US Congress elections to create history as a Muslim. It fought the elections owing to injustices. It was also because my children are questioning their identity and belongingness to the US, she added.
Replying to TV interview in August, Tlaib said that she was never the one to be get marginalized. She blazed a trail through the politics in Michigan similar to Omar. Tlaib became the first Muslim woman to get elected to the Legislature of Michigan State in 2008.
