US Senator Orrin Hatch

195000 H-1B visas annually have been proposed by US Senator Orrin Hatch which is 110,000+ over existing annual quota. The Senator from the Republic Party is all set to propose a bill that proposes to increase the annual allocation of H-1B visas by more than 50%. This will more than twice enhance the access of highly skilled overseas workers to US firms.

Tech firms in the US including Facebook and Google have contended that the bill is required to maintain the competitiveness of the US firms. The reason is that the US lacks an adequate number of graduates in the respective fields to cater to the demands.

Matt Whitlock the Spokesperson for Hatch said that immigration reform for highly skilled workers has obtained powerful bipartisan support even earlier. This will also be of advantage to any bigger immigration agreement believes Hatch, said the Spokesperson.

The proposed bill seeks as much as 195000 H-1B visas for annual allocation. This is 110,000 plus over the existing quota. It is also likely to b supported by the Democratic lawmakers. A former version of the bill was jointly sponsored by Senator Chris Coons, as quoted by the Week.

The bill that is being proposed by Hatch is also likely to seek abolition of caps for the number of PR holders that can arrive from a specific nation. The nation-wise quota has often thwarted workers from China and particularly India. It would also intend to ease curbs on others that are entitled to work and live in the US lastingly. This would be family members and advanced graduated in STEM field.

The proposal is likely to be added to a bigger package for immigration such as DACA legislative fix that has a cut-off date of 8 February to be brought up for the vote in the US Congress.
