17 million Indians make up the largest immigrant community globally in 2017 according to the latest report revealed by the United Nations. 5 million Indians reside in the Gulf region itself as per the new Global Immigration Report. Indians were followed by nationals of Mexico with 13 million. The other countries with large immigrant population include Russia with 11 million, China with 10 million, Bangladesh with 7 million, Syria with 7 million, and Ukraine and Pakistan both with 6 million.
Indians have emerged as the largest immigrant community globally in 2017 residing at diverse destinations. 3 million Indians reside in the UAE and 2 million each in Saudi Arabia and the US, as quoted by the Hindu Business Line. It has been estimated that the global immigrant population stands at 258 million. This is an increase of 49% since 2000, adds the report.
Under-Secretary-General at the UN Department of Economic and Social Affairs Liu Zhenmin said that authentic data and proof are vital to battle misconceptions about immigration. These are also vital for the formulation of immigration policies added Liu. The latest estimates of global immigrants offer a crucial baseline for United Nations member nations. This is even as they begin their discussions for Regular and Orderly Immigration and International Compact for Safety added the Under-Secretary-General.
The UN report demonstrates that overseas immigration contributes crucially to the growth of population in several parts of the world. It also reverses the decline of population in many nations.
In the period between 2000 and 2015, immigration contributed for 42% growth of population in Northern America and for Oceania it was 31%. The European population would also have declined in the same period if not for overseas immigration.
