British Columbia predicts significant job growth with 1 million job openings

The recently released report from Labour Market Outlook report for British Columbia (BC) shows that there will be 1 million job openings in the province by 2033. This report is based on the 10 year forecast of the region’s in demand skills, careers, and hiring industries.

 

65% of British Columbia new job openings will be filled by retiring workers. The remaining of 35% jobs will contribute in the expanding the British Columbia’s workforce.

 

The government predicts an annual employment growth rate of 1.2%, indicating that 3.1 million more people will be employed in British Columbia.

 

46% of new job seekers in British Columbia are expected to be new immigrants and 470,000 additional immigrant labourers are projected over the decade.

 

The province states that there will be an equal number of job seekers and new job openings due to the higher anticipated immigration levels and increased labour force among the key age groups.

In demand occupations identified in British Columbia

The province has identified occupations with the highest opportunities, categorized by the level of education required:

 

Degrees

  • Registered psychiatric nurses and registered nurses
  • Kindergarten school and elementary teachers
  • Designers and Software engineers

 

College diploma or traineeship

  • Community and social service workers
  • Early childhood educators and assistants
  • Police officers

 

High school or specific occupation training

  • Messengers and couriers
  • Letter carriers
  • Parcel and mail sorters, and other related occupations

 

Initiatives by British Columbia in expanding access training programs

 

In order to ensure the residents have the necessary skills and training, the province is actively expanding access to training programs:

  • Funding 602 new nursing seats at colleges and universities
  • Establishing a new medical school at Simon Fraser University
  • Creating over 1,700 additional early childhood educator (ECE) spaces
  • Adding approximately 6,000 new tech-relevant spaces
  • Funding $271.3 million towards Vancouver Community College's Centre for Clean Energy and Automotive Innovation

British Columbia provincial nomination and pathways

British Columbia invites applicants to apply for provincial nomination through the British Columbia Provincial Nominee Program (BCPNP) every week in order to support the province in expanding the size of workforce.  The province targets and selects the candidates who can easily integrate into the economy.

 

In 2023, the province has more frequently sent draws for tech-related, early childhood educators and assistants, healthcare, and construction-related fields.

 

British Columbia PNP offers many routes for skilled immigrants, including skilled workers, international graduates, and entry-level and semi-skilled streams which lead to provincial nomination. Additionally, there are specialized streams for IT, entrepreneurship, and Express Entry applicants and every program has specific requirements to be eligible.
