What activities can you do with a working holiday visa (Subclass 417 visa)?

A Working Holiday visa (Subclass 417 visa) allows you to travel, work in various jobs but only specified work aligned to address the labor shortage in the country, study for a limited time during your stay in the country for 12 months.  
 

A Subclass 417 visa allows young nationals (18-30 years old) to reside, work, and study in the country for 1 year. The Working Holiday visa cannot be extended but you can apply for another Working Holiday visa for the second and third time if you meet the visa's eligibility requirements.

Activities that can be done with a Working Holiday Visa (Subclass 417 visa)

During an applicant’s stay in Australia with Subclass 417 visa, an applicant can do the following:
 

  • Short-term work
  • Study up to 4 months
  • Travel to and from Australia whenever the applicant wants
     

Specific Industries to Work in a Working Holiday Visa

An applicant can work in Australia with the Working Holiday Visa only in particular industries that address labor shortages in the country. Below are the specific sectors that a candidate is allowed to work for:
 

  • Tourism and hospitality in Northern or Remote and Very Remote Australia, from 22 June 2021
  • Fishing and pearling in regional Australia
  • Plant and animal cultivation in regional Australia
  • Mining in regional Australia
  • Construction in regional Australia
  • Tree farming and felling in regional Australia
  • Bushfire recovery work in declared bushfire-affected areas carried out after 31 July 2019
  • recovery work in flood, cyclone, or other severe weather-affected areas carried out after 31 December 2021
  • Critical COVID-19 work in the healthcare and medical sectors anywhere in Australia after 31 January 2020
     

Studying in Australia with a Working Holiday visa

An applicant can study for up to 4 months in the country during their stay with a Working Holiday visa. There are certain short-term courses that they can study under the Working Holiday visa, such as

  • English language studies
  • Vocational training
  • Hospitality courses
  • Agriculture courses
  • Business or creative arts courses
     

Travel to and from Australia with a Working Holiday visa

An applicant can travel freely in or out of Australia multiple times while the visa is valid. There is no restriction to travel anywhere in Australia except for the applicant, who must be traveling alone, not with any dependent children, and must maintain the intention to work primarily on holiday or temporarily.
 

Requirements to apply for a Working Holiday visa

Applicant must fulfill the following requirements to apply for a Working Holiday visa:

  • Be from an eligible country
  • Aged between 18-30 years
  • Apply for outside Australia
  • Have sufficient proof of funds
  • Meet health and character requirements
  • Intention to holiday and work in Australia
  • Valid passport with 6 months validity
