US Universities have around 2.5 lakh Indian students making India 2nd largest source nation for overseas students in the US. The statistics are for the fiscal year 2017. China is the top source nation with 4.81 lakhs students in the US from the nation. The report was revealed by the Student and Exchange Visitor Information System. SEVIS is under the ICE - Immigration and Customs Enforcement.

More than 1.5 million overseas students are studying in diverse US Universities and Colleges. This is as per the SEVIS report. India and China combined account for almost 50% of the overseas students in the US.

The other top source nations for overseas students in the US are again 3 nations from Asia. These are South Korea with 95, 701, Saudi Arabia with 72, 358 and Japan with 41, 862. The other nations in top 10 include Canada, Brazil, Taiwan, Vietnam, and Mexico, as quoted by the Live Mint.

Nevertheless, Indian students top the list for STEM OPT - Optional Practical Training authorizations. Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics OPT are a 24-month extension of OPT. This is for eligible students with degrees in STEM areas. Pre-completion OPT is held before the end of the program date of the student.

Out of the overall 89, 839 STEM OPT overseas students around 50, 507 were from India. They were followed by students from China with 21, 705, South Korea with 1, 670, and Iran with 1, 161.

Remarkably, Indian students do not like to arrive at the US for School education. China tops the list of overseas students at the higher secondary level with 44, 573. It is followed by South Korea with 6, 842, Vietnam with 6, 107, Mexico with 2, 865 and Brazil with 1, 926.
