New Zealand Immigration

The Brexit vote and American Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump’s rising popularity have made many of the UK and US citizens express their interest in migrating to New Zealand.

According to stuff.co.nz, Immigration NZ normally receives 3,000 applications from Britons interested in working, studying or investing in New Zealand per month, but it jumped to 5,005 in just 12 days following the Brexit vote on 23 June in the UK.

Immigration NZ spokeswoman Emma Murphy said that a similar pattern was seen among Americans wishing to study, work or invest in New Zealand. Their department received 13,522 applications in less than a quarter as against the normal figure of 7,000 per quarter following Trump’s victory in Indiana primary on 3 May.

The number of migrants arriving on New Zealand’s shores in 2016 till May reached 69,090, the highest ever for this country.

Murphy said that they gauged the increase in interest of Britons by their visits to New Zealand Now and their department’s websites. The average number of Britons visiting both the websites was 3,700. The number of visitors from the UK, however, grew to 10,000 in the 12 days after the Brexit vote.

On the other hand, the number of average US visitors rose from 6,100 per day to 8,700 following the Indiana primary.
