People graduating with top grades in the STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) degrees bag the highest starting pay packets in the United Status, according to a recent study. Among these, Bachelor’s degree students passing out of the Computer, Chemical and Electrical Engineering streams get the highest starting salaries.

Published by Michigan State University’s CERI (Collegiate Employment Research Institute), this data is released every year to study data on starting salaries from several employers from across the US. CERI’s findings shed light on the top 20 highest-paying graduation courses. This year’s study, which was headed by CERI’s Director Phil Gardner, sourced data from over 4,730 employers across the country.

Graduates in Chemical Engineering got the highest starting salaries in 2016. This degree fetches pay packets ranging between $34,850 and $100,600, with an average of about $63,389, according to Forbes, which published the CERI data.

Taking second place were Computer Engineering students, whose initial pay averaged at about $63,313 and Electrical Engineering stood at the third place with $61,173.

Electrical Engineering was the highest-paying degree for college graduates in 2014, with Computer Engineering and Mechanical Engineering taking the second and third places respectively.

Meanwhile, the three least paying were psychology at $36,327, public relations and advertising at $36,235 and $35,733, respectively.

As far master’s degrees were concerned, engineering majors bagged the highest initial pays at over an average of $68,000, while computer science & IT pass outs averaged $67,735 and MBAs $62,345, respectively.

PhD diploma holders with engineering & computer science were the biggest gainers with a pay starting at an average of $76,702. They were followed by physical & biological sciences and business.

CERI’s survey revealed that 39 percent of the employers would hike initial salaries by 2% to 5%, 15 percent by over 10 percent, while 61 percent do not intend to hike starting salary levels.
