What are the different types of visas for Portugal immigration?

Portugal offers several visas to visitors and expats who are planning for Portugal immigration. The country provides short-term and long-term visas to cater to the needs and purpose of immigrants. Visa requirements also vary based on the nationality of the applicant, as certain countries do not require a visa to travel to Portugal for short stays.

 

Types of Visas for Portugal Immigration

There are four main types of visa categories offered by Portugal:

  • Residence Visas
  • Temporary Stay Visas
  • Job Seeker Visa
  • Short-term Schengen visas

Portugal Residence Visas

These are long-term residence permits granted to immigrants who are willing to stay in Portugal for a long duration. Depending on the purpose and the profile of the applicant, these visas have a validity period of 4 months to 3 years. Immigrants like relatives of Portuguese citizens, entrepreneurs, foreign employees of Portuguese companies, and international students of Portuguese Universities can apply for this type of visa.

The different types of Portugal Residence Permits are listed below:

  • Portugal Work Permit: Portugal offers several visas to employees working under Portugal employers. Depending on the type of employment, foreign workers can apply for one of the following work permits:
    • D1 Subordinated Professional Activity Visa
    • D2 Independent Professional Activity/Entrepreneur immigrants/Start-up Visa
    • D3 University Teaching Position/ Highly Qualified Activity/Cultural Activity Visa
    • D7 Retirement or Passive Income Visa
    • DR Residence Visa for Digital Nomads
    • E2 Intra Corporate Transfer of Citizens between States Party WTO Visa
    • E8 Seasonal Work (for more than 90 days)

  • Portugal Study Permit: International students willing to migrate to Portugal for study purposes can apply for a Portugal Study permit. Based on their course and discipline, students can choose among the following types of study permits in Portugal:
    • D4 Research/Study/Internship Visa
    • E6 Student Exchange/Unpaid Professional Internship/Volunteer Work
       
  • Portugal Family Visa: Portugal offers the D6 Family Reunification Visa for family members willing to join their close relatives in the country. D6 visa holders can stay in Portugal for up to 2 years if their sponsor holds a permanent Portugal Resident Permit.
     
  • Special residence Permit for Portugal: Portugal issues special residence permits for certain exceptional situations such as for:
    • Individuals suffering from acute health conditions which require prolonged medical assistance in Portugal
    • Individuals accompanying a student or a patient receiving treatment in Portugal
    • Individuals who have served under the Portuguese Armed Forces
    • Minors born to foreign parents who have residence permits in Portugal

Temporary Stay Visas

These are multiple-entry visas issued to immigrants willing to stay in Portugal for less than a year. The following are the different types of temporary stay visas offered by Portugal:

  • Seasonal Work Visa
  • Transit Visa (Seamen)
  • E1 Medical Treatment Visa
  • E5 Amateur Sports Visa
  • E7 Accompanying Of a Currently Ill Family Member Visa
  • E9 Educational/Professional Course (less than a year)
  • EF Temporary Stay Visa for accompanying family member Visa
  • ER Temporary Stay Visa Digital Nomads

Portugal Job Seeker Visa

This single-entry visa allows job seekers from non-EU countries to migrate to Portugal and look for job opportunities in the country. The visa is valid for 120 days and can be renewed for another 60 days upon expiry. Portugal Job Seeker visa holders can also take part-time employment while looking for jobs in Portugal.
 

Short-term Schengen Visa

Portugal, being one of the 26 Schengen countries, allows immigrants to enter the country on short-term Schengen Visas. The short-term Schengen visas enable the holders to enter any of the Schengen countries and stay there for up to 90 days.
 

Depending on the purpose of the visit, the types of short-term Schengen Visas are listed below:

Holders of the visas mentioned above can enter and remain in Portugal for 90 days.
