A new MSc Satellite Applications course is being launched by the University of Strathclyde, Glasgow in Scotland. This is for Entrepreneurial engineers who are interested in Study Abroad.

The new MSc course aims to address the Sustainable Development Goals of the UN. This is through Data Science, Entrepreneurship, and Satellite Applications, as quoted by the Times of India.

The volume of data received every day from the spacecraft in orbit of the earth has increased exponentially in the last decade. The trends indicate that this will continue for the coming 5 to 10 years at least. Trained professionals for processing this data are scarce while the satellite datasets volume has rapidly increased.

Professor in the Department of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering at University of Strathclyde Malcom Macdonald said that global support available for entrepreneurial activity is increasing. Along with this, there is also rapid growth in archives and the availability of data. This has highlighted the crucial skills gaps that are addressed by the new MSc course, he added.

Macdonald explained that the course will focus on Entrepreneurship skills and Data Science apart from training in processing and application of satellite data. It will require the students to register a new business while pursuing the MSc course. They will have to design a business plan having Sustainable Development Goals of the UN as a wide range of challenges, said the Professor.

Students in India must Study Abroad and apply for the new MSc Satellite Applications course said, Macdonald. This is because ISRO - the Indian Space Research Organisation has a strong heritage in technology and expanding strength in the usage of data derived from space. Thus, this course will permit them to obtain maximum value from ISRO’s strengths, he explained.

Malcom Macdonald said that upon completion of the course, students have diverse career options such as

  • Remote Sensing Specialists
  • Space Technology Business Analysts
  • Geospatial Intelligence Analysts
  • Meteorological Experts
  • Geographical Information Specialists
  • Software Developers

The program can also pave way for the Entrepreneurial engineers to launch their own firm added the Professor.
