Steps to study in Canada

The step-by-step process to study in Canada is as follows:

Step 1: Decide what you want to pursue in Canada

  • Determine the program you wish to pursue, such as an undergraduate or postgraduate or PhD program
  • You must consider your long-term career goals, the course budget, and a suitable location in Canada.

Step 2: Choose a program and university

  • You must do in-depth research on universities and colleges in Canada. Popular universities include the University of Toronto, the University of British Columbia, and McGill University.
  • Check program details on the university website, including program duration, curriculum, fee, and admission requirements.
  • Ensure that the university you have opted for is a Designated Learning Institution (DLI) since only DLIs can admit international students.

Note: The cost involved may vary depending on the program that you have chosen and the duration of the program. The table below gives a rough estimate of the cost involved in bachelor, master, and doctoral programs:

Program

Average cost involved (in CAD)

Undergraduate

CAD 20,000 – CAD 40,000/ Year

Post Graduate

CAD 15,000 – CAD 35,000/ Year

Doctoral (PhD)

CAD 20,000 – CAD 35,000/ Year

Diploma/Certificate

CAD 10,000 – CAD 20,000/ Year

Step 3: Apply to your chosen university

  • Gather relevant documents required for admission, such as academic transcripts, SOP or personal essay, LORs, proof of language proficiency, Resume or CV, Portfolio, etc.
  • Pay the fee and submit the application ( the fee varies depending on the program and university you have chosen)

Step 4: Receive and accept the offer

  • Accept the offer letter once you receive it from the university you have applied
  • Once the offer is accepted, you will receive a Letter of Acceptance (LoA), which is essential for visa application

Step 5: Apply for a study permit

  • A study permit is mandatory for programs whose duration exceeds 6 months.
  • You must apply for the permit at the Immigration, Refugee, Citizenship Canada (IRCC) website.
  • Collect all necessary documents, such as proof of financial support, medical certificate, police clearance certificate, and educational documents for submission.
  • Once the study permit is approved, you will receive a Port of Entry (PoE) or Letter of Introduction, allowing you to enter Canada as a temporary resident.

Step 6: Travel to Canada

  • After you reach Canada, you must present the PoE, passport, and financial proof to the Canada Border Services Agency (CBSA) officer.
  • Receive your study permit and start your studies in Canada.

Step 7: Attend orientation offered by your university

  • Participate in the orientation to learn more about your campus, academic expectations, and student life
