A record number of 45,000 new migrants, with the bulk coming from India and China, have arrived in New Zealand during the first nine months of the year, while migrant departures fell due to fewer New Zealanders leaving for Australia, Statistics New Zealand said.
A net loss of 6,000 people to Australia in September is the smallest since December 1994 when 5,900 were recorded, the agency said.
This September, New Zealand recorded net gains of 9,100 migrants from India, 7,000 from China, 5,300 from the UK and 3,400 from the Philippines.
The high numbers are equal to gains recorded in August 2014 and February 2003.
