Is a German PR and EU Blue Card the same or different?

Updated October 08 2024

A German PR and an EU Blue Card are not the same. While a German PR offers permanent residency in the country with no limitations, an EU Blue Card acts as a temporary residence permit that allows non-EU foreign nationals to live and work in Germany for a maximum of four years. EU and non-EU citizens can apply for permanent residence in Germany, whereas only non-EU nationals are eligible to apply for an EU Blue Card. Individuals who have completed five years in Germany are eligible for a German PR, while an EU Blue card can only qualify for permanent residence after 33 months in the country.
