Better opportunities, good quality of education and most importantly lower fees are what prompts Indian students to study abroad.
As per a new RTI data, the MCI (Medical Council of India) issued 3,386 more eligibility certificates in 2018. Medical aspirants who wish to study overseas need to obtain this certificate for admission in medical universities abroad.
As per RTI no. MEDCI/2018/51942, the MCI had issued a total of 17,504 eligibility certificates in 2018. There has been a surge in the number of students going abroad to study medicine since 2015.
The number of students applying for eligibility certificates doubled in 2017-18 as compared to 2016-17. The numbers have further increased in 2018.
In 2019, almost 2 lakh more candidates are expected to appear for the NEET exam. In comparison to 2018, that is a growth of 14.4%. The number of candidates for medical entrance exams rose from 13.26 lakhs to 15.19 lakhs.
Even though there is a significant rise in the number of students, the number of medical seats in the country remains the same. This has led to tough competition.
Saju Bhaskar, President of Texila American University, says that Indian students who fail to secure a Govt. seat often opt to study abroad. Medical Universities abroad offer good quality education at lower fees. Also, the opportunities abroad are much better.
MCI issued a total of 8,737 eligibility certificates to aspiring medical students in 2016-17. The number further increased to 14,118 certificates in 2017-18.
India made it mandatory for aspiring medical students to obtain eligibility certificates in January 2014.
