Ajit Kumar, the first-ever Consul General of India in Atlanta
India has become the latest foreign government to open a consulate in Atlanta, Gov. Nathan Deal announced Thursday. An office representing India’s interests in Georgia, Florida, Alabama, Mississippi, South Carolina and Tennessee began operating at the beginning of the new year. The consulate was first announced in February 2011. “This marks a significant milestone in Georgia’s international evolution,” Deal said in a prepared statement. “The consulate general is the crowning symbol of the dynamic business and cultural connections India shares with our region and state.” Ajit Kumar, who previously served his country in Germany, South Africa and Zimbabwe, is India’s first consul general in Atlanta. He will head a staff of 20 full-time employees. Atlanta’s consular corps and community of trade commissions and bi-national chambers of commerce represent more than 70 countries.
