The rate of migrants’ inflow from India and China into the US surpasses Mexican arrivals in most parts of the North American country, unlike a decade ago, studies reveal.

An analysis of census figures by the Wall Street Journal reveals that in Georgia, New York, Florida, Ohio, Illinois, Virginia, and other states, migrant arrivals from India and China together surpassed the numbers from Mexico in 2014.

The same year saw around 136,000 people arriving in the US from India, followed by approximately 128,000 from China and close to 123,000 from Mexico, according to census figures. Even in 2005, the US received over six times as many Mexicans when compared to Indians and their arrivals exceeded about ten times coming in from China.

These numbers include both lawful and undocumented immigrants, without making a distinction between the two. Although Indian and Chinese migrants are more likely to be in the US legally when compared to Mexicans, Asians still comprise the fastest-growing undocumented immigrants in America, according to researchers. On the other hand, undocumented immigrants from Mexico and some other Central American countries make up about 71 percent of America’s illegal immigrant population, followed by Asians at 13 percent, says the Migration Policy Institute.

It dismisses the US Presidential campaign discourse, which stresses on illegal migrants from Mexico entering the world’s largest economy through its southern border.

Associate dean of the University of California, Riverside School of Public Policy, Karthick Ramakrishnan, was quoted by the news daily as saying that this perception of a wall and exaggerated figures of Mexican migrants is the toughest challenge that the United States faces. It is not in touch with reality at all, he adds.
