In the state of Utah (United States), immigrants earned more than $5 billion a year and contributed 7.6 percent of the total tax revenues in 2014. This was revealed in a new report released by the Partnership for a New American Economy released on 3 August.
KSL.com quotes the report as stating that Utah immigrants, numbering around 250,000, serve at all levels, ranging from livestock workers to entrepreneurs, contributing crucially to the state’s overall economic success.
The report further states that 13,280 immigrants in the Beehive State were self-employed and the businesses run by them earned more than $248 million, besides providing employment to 31,224 people in 2014.
Other national studies conducted recently noted that more than 50 percent of the grocery stores operating in the US and close to half the country’s nail salons are owned by immigrants.
According to the report, entrepreneurs of foreign origin have a major stake in 51 percent of America’s billion-dollar new businesses. In addition, more than two out of five Fortune 500 companies have at least one founder who is either an immigrant or an offspring of immigrants.
The Sandy Area Chamber of Commerce President and CEO, Stan Parrish, was quoted as saying that it was important for Utah to continue attracting and retaining world’s leading innovators and entrepreneurs. Utah, as of now, has a very lively and fledgling technology sector where talented workers are needed in the STEM segment.
As per the report, workers of non-American origin comprise 11.1 percent of all entrepreneurs in Utah though they make up for just 8.6 population of the total state’s population. Legal immigrants as well as documented immigrants have contributed to the state of Utah in several ways, the report stated.
Stan Lockhart of IM Flash Technologies said that his experience of working in the tech sector of Utah has made him realise that immigrants do not take up employment, but they help create employment.
