The International English Language Testing System [IELTS] is a standardized test that assesses the individual for their proficiency in the English language.
IELTS scores are usually required by those wishing to work overseas or study abroad where English is used as a language of communication. Certain countries also ask for IELTS test results from their prospective immigrants.
There are 2 kinds of IELTS tests –
IELTS Academic |
For those applying for professional registration or higher education. |
IELTS General Training |
For those migrating to the UK, Canada, or Australia; applying for work experience, training programs or secondary education in an English-speaking environment. |
The IELTS can be taken either in the paper-based format or delivered via a computer.
In the paper-based IELTS test, the individual will be required to sit down – at an official IELTS test centre – at a desk with the question papers as well as the answer sheets for the modules of Writing, Listening and Reading. The Speaking module will be carried out in a face-to-face setting with a trained IELTS examiner.
In the computer-based IELTS, on the other hand, the individual will have to sit in front of a computer – at an official IELTS test centre – and submit their answers to questions through a keyboard and mouse. The Writing, Reading and Listening modules will be in front of the computer. The Speaking test will not be administered through a computer and will have to be appeared for in a face-to-face setting.
Generally, the IELTS is available at over 1,600 locations worldwide.
However, with the COVID-19 pandemic impacting services, many test centres had not been functioning as usual in the recent past.
Nevertheless, as per a latest update, paper-based and computer-based tests are now being conducted for the following cities by the British Council and IDP –
