It is an open secret that most self-proclaimed natives of the United States are immigrants themselves because the truly Native Americans are American Indians and other indigenous people who have been living there for more than a millennium. They, today, constitute only 1.6 percent of the US population.
David Letterman, an American television host, was quoted by The Time of India as saying that if Native American were posed the question as to how many people are immigrants of the US, the answer would be around 300 million. The same viewpoint was endorsed by Jay Leno, another popular US TV personality.
In reality, white settlers, mostly from European countries, are said to have illegally dubbed themselves ‘original Americans’ and are trying to protect its borders, citing security or economic reasons. According to the newspaper, this anti-immigrant feeling is not just restricted to the US. Despite all of this, the US is still not as anti-immigrant as any other country as immigrants played a key role in building this nation, the largest economy in the world. This can be substantiated by the fact that it is the only country which has been welcoming one million immigrants every year.
Of course, letting them in has been prompted by findings that immigrants have been the most enterprising group in the US. A report of Kauffman Foundation said that quite a few of the world‘s most productive and innovative companies have been founded and steered by immigrant entrepreneurs.
Moreover, the US, which is suffering from a shortage of STEM workers, is being unfriendly to Skilled Overseas Workers from countries which are non-white. America has to realize that adopting such a policy would not work in its economic interest at all.
The article concludes by saying that immigration is the stimulus for overall growth not of the US alone, but the entire world.
