Getting Overseas Funding for your research ideas is tough. You may want to apply for a research grant in case you wish to study for your Ph.D. or Masters.

There is no easy way to write a successful application. However, knowing what to include in your research proposal can definitely make the process much less stressful. Also, clarity on when and who to submit the proposal may make it much more successful.

Writing your research proposal:

A well-formed research proposal is the first step in the process. The research funder would like to understand the purpose of your research and whether your research is worth investing in. They would also be highly interested to know if your research would be high on returns. Hence you need to have the utmost clarity on the topic that you intend to research upon and why. You should also be able to estimate the impact of your research on the society.

Finding relevant bodies to fund your research:

Having written the research proposal, you should now be finding relevant funders to fund your research. Different countries have different corporate and government bodies that have a budget for research and development and they may be lucrative funders. Before applying, it would be worth your time to ensure that your research meets their funding criteria. You should also ensure your research proposal adheres to their application guidelines. Also, if you wish to study in a particular country, it is better to look for funding in those areas.

Submitting your research proposal:

After you have narrowed down on the funding bodies, it is now time to submit your proposal to them. You should ensure that your proposal meets all of their criteria. It is advisable that you include topics like budget, the long and short-term impact of your research, various important milestones etc. It is recommended to submit your proposal at least 2 to 3 months prior to commencing your Overseas Studies.

Waiting for response:

This is the hardest and the most nerve-wracking part of the process. You need to wait to get a response from the funders. There is no stipulated timeframe for them to respond. It is good to check the application starting and close date, if available on their website.

Most important of all is not to give up. Not all funders may respond and hence one should keep trying. If you receive any reviews or feedback for your proposal it is best to include the valid points. This makes your proposal more viable.
