For International Students, rankings are important as they provide a crucial snapshot of a particular institution or country. When seeking a University abroad, this can prove to be vital.

Domestically, you have the option of visiting the campus but when seeking admission overseas that is not always possible. Hence information such as teaching quality, student satisfaction etc. which are popular markers of education quality can be very helpful.

The Internet is full of rankings of varied combinations and factors which add to the confusion. It can be difficult to decide which rankings are reliable through the amount of information they supply.

Keeping that in mind, listed below are 4 global rankings every Overseas Student should know about:

1. QS World University Rankings: It is published by Quacquarelli Symonds (QS). This global ranking compares Universities in four major areas-teaching, research, employability and global outlook. It claims that its rankings are designed with overseas students in mind. QS also is the only international ranking to have received International Ranking Expert Group (IREG) approval, as per The Times of India.

2. Times Higher Education (THE) World University Rankings: THE World University Rankings is an annual publication of over 1000 Universities all over the world. This publication uses five broad indicators namely teaching, research, citations, international outlook, and industry income.

3. US News and World Report’s Best Global Universities: This publication ranks 1,250 Universities from the US and over 70 countries across the world. They use 13 indicators which include:

  • International research reputation
  • Domestic research reputation
  • Conferences
  • Publications
  • Books
  • Normalized citation influence
  • Total number of citations

Published by Shanghai Ranking Consultancy, this ranking is often praised for its objective, stability, and transparency of its methodology. They use 4 criteria- quality of education, quality of faculty, research output and per capita performance.
