To apply for a Sweden work visa, you must meet the following requirements:

 

  • You must have a valid passport, and it should remain valid for the entire period of your work permit.
  • You must have a signed job offer or employment contract from a Swedish employer.
  • Your monthly salary must be at least SEK 34,470 or meet the minimum salary requirement for your occupation.
  • Your salary and working conditions must match the standards followed in Sweden for your job or industry.
  • Your employer must arrange health insurance, life insurance, work injury insurance, and occupational pension insurance before you start working.
  • If your employment is for one year or less, you must have comprehensive health insurance that covers your stay in Sweden.

The median salary in Sweden, updated by Statistics Sweden on 16 June 2026, is SEK 38,300 per month. Your salary may need to be higher than the threshold if collective agreements or industry practice require it.

Occupations exempt from the 90% salary requirement

Certain professions only need to meet 75% of the median salary. Key exempt occupations include:

 

  • IT operations technicians, IT support technicians, systems administrators, and network and systems technicians
  • Engineers and technicians in chemistry and chemical engineering, and laboratory engineers
  • Assistant nurses (home care, elderly care, healthcare and specialist wards, outpatient services)
  • Childcare assistants, ambulance care assistants, and care assistants
  • Welders and gas cutters, structural steel erectors, and maintenance mechanics
  • Forestry workers, farm animal caretakers, and drivers of agricultural and forestry machinery
  • Butchers, meat cutters, and machine operators in food processing industries

Other exempt groups include former students and researchers in Sweden applying for their first work permit, doctors, dentists and nurses with foreign qualifications obtaining Swedish certification, and employees of certain start-up tech or life science companies (less than five years old with fewer than 100 employees).

The documents required to apply for a Sweden work visa are as follows:

 

  • Correctly made copies of your valid passport
  • Employment contract signed by both you and your employer
