Yes, foreign nationals can bring their family members to the country. The right to family reunification depends on the nature of the sponsor legal residence in the country. Only EEA nationals and persons granted refugee status or subsidiary protection in the State have a legal right to family reunification for certain family members. Parents, spouse or partner can join in Ireland if they can support them financially. Foreign nationals must earn more than €60,000 (or €75,000 for two parents) after three years of residing in the country before applying.

Pathways to bring family members to Ireland

Family reunification through Work permits

For applicants who have found employment in Sweden and are applying for a work permit, bringing your family to Sweden is relatively easy. The Migration Agency generally allows children up until 18 to be considered close family members.

However, those already holding work permits can bring unmarried children up to the age of 21. Our other article provides more information on the documentation that will be required for your spouse and for children, too. If the certificate is not in English, it must be translated. Both the original and the translation must be submitted.

For other work permit categories, such as ICT permits, EU blue cards, and researcher permits, you can only bring children up to 18.

The family members must apply for a license to enter the country as third-country nationals. As EU citizens, they have the right to reside in Ireland for an indefinite period, so the family members will automatically have the right to reside with their family members.

Family members through Swedish citizens

Swedish citizens who wish to bring any third-country national can bring their family members to the country. Swedish national can get their partners, as well as any children under 18, to the government.
