10 Important things to carry when going to Canada for Study

You have got the Student Visa to Canada and you are all set to go there. You can’t wait enough to go there and you are excited. This is very much normal. You want your study and the stay in Canada to be a smooth and comfortable one. You cannot afford to miss this opportunity.

 

There is an important checklist for you which you should have as soon as you arrive at Canada. Below is it.

 

  1. Letter of Acceptance

You must have received an email which is called the Acceptance Letter. Take a print out of it and keep it with you. This should be shown along with the application form.

 

  1. Identity Card – Government Issued

Apart from carrying your passport, also take other government Identity like a driver’s licence or your Aadhar card.

 

Before booking the one way ticket, check the date of expiry on your passport. Your passport should be valid for at least 6 months (the complete tenure of your study). A study permit will not be issued beyond your passport’s validity.

 

If your passport needs a renewal, apply for it as soon as possible because you will not be allowed to continue your study without a valid passport.

 

  1. Proof of Funds

Keep your money where it is safe and easily accessible to you all through the tenure of your study. Also carry the required financial documents that prove to support you financially all during your stay there. The amount you should have is a minimum of $10,000 for Canada (for Quebec - $11,000)

 

Documents to show your financial proof can be

  • A Canadian bank account on your name
  • Education or student loan from a bank
  • Last 4 months bank statement
  • Bank draft which can be exchanged with Canadian dollars
  • Housing & tuition fee payment proof
  • Proof of scholarship received from Canada
     
  1. Tuition Fees

The tuition fee might cost you between 10,000 dollars and 30,000 dollars for an year. This completely depends on the course, institution and the location you have chosen.

 

It is good if you can carry a money order or a bank draft for the same.

 

  1. Study Permit

You should get a Canadian study permit which is otherwise called a Canadian student Visa all through the tenure of your stay there.

 

If your course is less than 6 months, you will not need this document. But, it is better if you apply for one because there are chances that you might want to continue your studies.

 

The letter of acceptance, Identity proofs and the financial proofs are mandatory if you want the study permit. You also have the option of applying for this online.

 

  1. Medical Records

Do not forget to carry the medical documents which might include Dental, medical and vaccination related records.

 

A full medical check-up record of you, which is taken just before leaving to Canada, is required.

 

  1. Gadgets & SIM Card

Taking notes in a laptop is very common in Canada, just like carrying a smartphone, to be in touch with classmates, be sure that your gadgets are in good working condition. Check for compatibility. Often the power plugs and the power sockets do not match.

 

Also get yourself a Canadian SIM card to use there.

 

  1. Accommodation

There are lot of options for International Student accommodation. You can opt staying in the campus. You can take a paying gust accommodation.

  1. Emergency Contact List

There is chance that your smart phone might not work due to some problem. You might not be able to access your contacts. Make a paper copy of the important contact list and keep it with the other important documents.

 

  1. Winter Clothing

The winter temperature in Canada will drop to as low as -10 degrees. If your stay is extending into Canadian winters, don’t forget to take proper winter clothing. Include gloves, woollen socks, coat and a hat. Winter generally starts in October in Canada.
