Types of Netherlands work visa

There are different types of work visas in Netherlands under short, temporary, and long term stay. The list of visas is given below:

Short term visa

Schengen category C visas, sometimes referred to as short-stay work visas, are good for up to 90 days, or a maximum of 90 days within any 180-day period. This visa is valid for business travel, work-related travel, and temporary positions that don't last longer than three months. Usually, you'll require an invitation to a work-related function or an offer of employment.

Temporary visa

In the Netherlands, temporary work permits are only available for contracted positions that last more than three months but no more than a year. List of temporary visas are:

Single Permit (GVVA – Work + Residence Permit)

  • Combines work authorization and residence permit
  • Validity depends on the employment contract (can be less or more than 1 year)

Seasonal Workers Visa

  • For seasonal jobs in agriculture and related sectors
  • Valid for up to 24 weeks within one year

Working Holiday Programme (WHP) Visa

  • Available to applicants aged 18–30 (or 35 for some countries)
  • Valid for up to 1 year
  • Open to citizens of selected partner countries (not all nationalities)

Entrepreneur / Start-up Visa

  • For non-EU entrepreneurs launching an innovative business
  • Valid for 1 year
  • Requires support from a recognized Dutch facilitator

Long-Term Work Visas

Long-term work visas are issued for skilled and professional employment and are usually renewable.

General Work Visa (Paid Employment)

  • For jobs where the employer proves no suitable local candidate is available
  • Usually valid for up to 3 years, extendable

Highly Skilled Migrant (HSM) Visa

  • For professionals meeting minimum salary thresholds
  • Valid for up to 5 years
  • One of the most popular routes for international professionals

EU Blue Card

  • For highly qualified professionals with recognized degrees
  • Valid for up to 4 years, renewable

Eligibility for Netherlands Work Visa

To work in the Netherlands, applicants must meet certain basic rules set by the Dutch government. These rules depend on the type of work visa but mainly focus on your job offer, salary, and qualifications.

  • You must have a valid job offer from an employer in the Netherlands
  • You must earn the minimum salary required by the Dutch authorities
  • Applicants below 30 years must earn at least €3,299 per month, and applicants above 30 years must earn at least €4,500 per month
  • For the Entrepreneur Visa, you must submit a business plan that benefits the Netherlands and have support from a recognized facilitator
  • For Intra-Company Transfer (ICT), you must be working as a trainee, specialist, or manager and should have worked with your company for at least 3 months before the transfer
  • For the EU Blue Card, you must have a job contract valid for at least 12 months and hold a higher education qualification of at least 3 years.
