The UK Student Dependent Visa allows the spouse, civil partner, unmarried partner, and children under 18 of an eligible international student to join them in the United Kingdom. It is issued under the UK Student visa route (formerly Tier 4) and permits family members to live, work (in most cases), and study alongside the main visa holder.
For Indian families where one partner is pursuing a postgraduate degree, PhD, or Government-sponsored programme at a UK university, the Student Dependent Visa is the recognised legal route to reunite in the UK during the course of study.
As of 2025, the UK government has significantly tightened eligibility for Student Dependants — most undergraduate and pre-sessional students can no longer bring dependants. Only students on postgraduate research programmes of 9 months or more, government-sponsored students, and those enrolled at certain higher education institutions are eligible. Understanding these restrictions is critical before applying.

The UK Student Dependent Visa gives Indian families an opportunity to stay together during a postgraduate programme that could last 1–3+ years. Rather than enduring years of separation, the spouse or partner can accompany the student, live in the UK, and in most cases work during the study period.
For Indian families where the main applicant is pursuing an MSc, MBA, or PhD in fields like technology, medicine, or business, the dependent spouse can often find employment in sectors with high demand for skilled professionals — such as IT support, healthcare, hospitality, or retail — while the primary applicant studies.
Children under 18 can attend state schools in the UK at no cost, offering access to a world-class education system. With the UK student visa pathway often leading to a post-study Graduate visa and then a Skilled Worker visa, the Student Dependent Visa can be the first step in a longer UK immigration journey.

The following family members of an eligible UK Student visa holder may apply:
Note: Parents, siblings, and adult children (18 and above) of the student are not eligible for this visa category.

UK Student Dependent visa holders have significant rights during the main applicant's study period:
All documents must be originals unless stated. Documents not in English must include a certified English translation.
The steps to apply for a UK Student Dependent Visa from India are as follows:
Verify the main student's course qualifies for bringing dependants — postgraduate research of 9+ months, government-sponsored, or eligible HEI. Confirm financial maintenance funds are sufficient including the dependent allowance.
The main student must receive their CAS from their UK institution before the dependent can apply. The CAS number is required in the dependent's application.
Each dependent must complete a separate online application on the UK Visas and Immigration (UKVI) portal.
Pay the visa fee (£490 per applicant) and IHS for each applicant during the online application.
Book an appointment at the nearest UK Visa Application Centre (VAC) in India — available in Mumbai, Delhi, Chennai, Hyderabad, Bengaluru, Kolkata, Chandigarh, Pune, and Ahmedabad.
Gather all required documents including marriage/birth certificates, financial evidence, and the main student's CAS.
Attend the UK Visa Application Centre with all original documents and complete biometrics (fingerprints and photograph).
Standard processing from outside the UK takes approximately 3 weeks. Priority services are available at additional cost.
Once approved, collect the visa vignette or BRP instructions, and travel to the UK to join your partner or parent for the study period.

Note: The IHS is a significant cost. For a 1-year MSc with a spouse and one child, the IHS alone can exceed £2,300 for the family. For a 3-year PhD, total IHS for a family of three exceeds £7,000. Budget carefully and factor in dependent allowance maintenance funds before applying.
The UK Student Dependent visa is granted for the same duration as the main student's visa. It expires when the main applicant's Student visa expires. When the student applies to extend their Student visa or switch to a Graduate/Skilled Worker visa, dependants must also apply to extend or switch their own visas at the same time.
| Situation | Validity Rule |
|---|---|
| Initial Visa Grant | Tied to main student's visa duration; typically 1–4 years depending on course length + extra time |
| Student Extends Their Visa | Dependent must apply separately to extend their own visa at the same time |
| Student Switches to Graduate Visa | Dependent can apply to switch to Graduate Dependent visa alongside the main applicant |
| Student Switches to Skilled Worker Visa | Dependent must switch to Skilled Worker Dependent visa at the same time |
| Student Abandons Studies or Visa Curtailed | Dependent's visa is also curtailed — seek immediate immigration advice |
| Relationship Breaks Down | Dependent's visa may be curtailed — seek legal advice immediately |
| Child Turns 18 | Must apply for own visa (e.g., Student visa) before 18th birthday |
Yes. Dependant spouses and partners can enrol in full-time or part-time courses at any UK institution. However, if the course they enrol in is above degree level or otherwise requires a Student visa in its own right, they should check whether they need to switch to their own Student visa.
| Study Aspect | Details |
|---|---|
| Spouse / Partner | Can study full-time or part-time at any UK institution — no status change required in most cases |
| Children Under 18 | Can attend full-time state (free) or private schools — no restriction |
| Children 18 and Over | Must apply for own Student visa — they lose dependent status at 18 |
| University / College | Any UK institution — no restrictions on enrolment for spouse or partner |
| Student Loan Eligibility | Not eligible for UK student loans on a dependent visa — must self-fund or seek scholarships |
The UK Student Dependent visa does not directly lead to ILR (Indefinite Leave to Remain). However, it is often the beginning of a longer immigration journey. When the main student transitions to a Graduate visa or Skilled Worker visa, the dependent can follow — and eventually qualify for ILR after 5 continuous years of lawful residence in qualifying visa categories.
| Stage | Details |
|---|---|
| Student Dependent Visa | Duration tied to student's visa; no direct ILR route from this stage |
| Graduate Visa (Post-Study Work Permit) | Main student can switch to 2-year (BSc/MSc) or 3-year (PhD) Graduate visa; dependent applies alongside |
| Skilled Worker Visa | Student and dependent switch to Skilled Worker route when student secures qualifying job offer |
| ILR Eligibility | After 5 continuous years of qualifying lawful residence (typically combining Student + Graduate + Skilled Worker periods) |
| British Citizenship | After ILR + 1 year of further residence — or 3 years as spouse of a British citizen |
| Practical Pathway | Student Dependent → Graduate Dependent → Skilled Worker Dependent → ILR → British Citizenship |
| Feature | UK Student Dependent Visa | USA F-2 Visa | Canada Study Permit Dependant |
|---|---|---|---|
| Main Applicant | Postgraduate student (9+ months) | F-1 international student | International student on study permit |
| Work Authorization | Full — any sector (postgrad dependants) | Not permitted — F-2 cannot work | Open Work Permit for spouse |
| Path to PR | Indirect — via Skilled Worker route; ILR after 5 years qualifying residence | No direct path from F-2 | Open Work Permit; PR via Express Entry or PNP |

This is a critical section for Indian applicants. Since January 2024, the UK government has dramatically restricted which international students can bring dependants. Here is what changed:
| Student Category | Can Bring Dependants? (2025) |
|---|---|
| Postgraduate research (PhD, MPhil, EngD — 9+ months) | YES — fully eligible |
| Government-sponsored students (e.g., GREAT Scholarship, Commonwealth) | YES — eligible regardless of level |
| Postgraduate taught (MSc, MBA, LLM — 1 year) | NO — unless government-sponsored or eligible HEI |
| Undergraduate (BEng, BSc, BA — 3–4 years) | NO — explicitly prohibited from January 2024 |
| Pre-sessional English programmes | NO |
| Students at eligible Higher Education Institutions (research-led) | Check with Y-Axis — eligibility depends on specific institution and course |
Important: If your course does not qualify, you cannot bring a spouse or children under the Student Dependent Visa route. Applying anyway will result in a refusal. Always verify your eligibility with a Y-Axis expert before submitting.
